Atif Aslam returns to Coke Studio after two years as among the biggest music superstars in the country. The success of his first performances in season 2 did little to pressure him to outdo himself this time. His official website states:
“The performances by Atif Aslam on Coke Studio not only solidified his reputation as a one-of-a-kind live act, the performances also made millions of music lovers fall in love with the music & vocals of Atif Aslam.”
Since he was last featured on the show, Aslam had broadened his talent base and expanded his range of musical creativity and expression. He has moved from crooning catchy pop ballads to more serious compositions to poetry and fusion with elements of sufi music and philosophy. This season Atif wants to continue exploring different avenues of music and present his songs in a different light.
“I’m blessed in a way that whenever I go on stage I try to improvise and sing a melody that I haven’t sung before. Every time something new is coming in I always try to explore different dimensions and dynamics in the song,” says Aslam.
Over the past couple of years Aslam has built up his image as a pop icon across South Asia and the expatriate community around the world. He performed his debut role as an actor in the Pakistani film, Bol, released by Geo Films in the summer of 2011. He also sang two songs from the soundtrack as duets with Hadiqa Kiyani. The film received an incredible response in Pakistan and India and established Aslam as a man with multiple talents. Aslam had received offers for roles in Bollywood films but turned them down saying that if he is to diversify into acting he would like to start with his roots and act in a Pakistani venture.
Aslam has been reported to be working on a collaboration with former band members of Guns ‘n’ Roses including Matt Sorum and Gilby Clarke who played as drummer and rhythm guitarist during the famous Use You Illusion tours in the early 1990s. Aslam says the purpose of the project was to bridge the difference between the diverse cultures of Pakistan and the US and aimed to raise money for various social causes through music.
Aslam was the third Pakistani musician to be included in soundtracks for a Hollywood film – the award winning Man Push Cart. Aslam now returns to Coke Studio season 5 with a voice and music that has matured through the years, bringing out a deeper, spiritual philosophy.
